Description
Plant Roselle in your garden with these seeds! The seeds are harvested from the Traditional Lifestyle Creations permaculture garden. Grow Zones 8-11. Prefers wet, well drained soil and full sun but will grow in partial shade. Roselle may tolerate a light freeze. Will grow as potted plant, but with well drained soil. Harvest of blooms and the calyx is generally 4-5 months from planting. The flowers are yellow/white with a red center. Pruning should be done. Roselle is a source of vitamin C, B2, vitamin A, B3 and B1. Minerals include calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. The seeds, young leaves/stems and flowers are edible but most popular is the center of the bloom called the calyx. The flower and the calyx are often dried and steeped as a tea. The red calyx leaves are separated from the green seed pod and can be used raw in salads, cooked and made into a “cranberry” sauce, jams/jellies, baked goods, drinks and other desserts. They can be frozen or dried to be preserved.
